So you've come to make yourself a little potato pal. Rightfully so! Potatoes are the greatest earth nuggets and that's a scientific fact. This is a great project for beginners and makes such a great, albeit random gift. Share your creation with #gnarlea and together, we can create more spud buds.

P A T T E R N

What You'll Need:
  • 9mm Crochet Hook
  • Bernat Blanket Yarn  (Mustard)
  • Brown Yarn (any size)
  • 20mm Safety Eyes
  • Polyfill Stuffing
  • Small bit of Black Felt
Key Terms:
  • Stitch (st)
  • Chain (ch)
  • Single Crochet (sc)
  • Increase (inc)
  • Decrease (dec)
Note:

I encourage you to read through the entirety of this pattern prior to starting so you get a better understanding of the construction. This project is worked in circles with a single strand of plush yarn. It can be easily manipulated with smaller or larger hook sizes and yarn, and made larger using 2 strands at once. All increase and decrease rows are to be repeated until the end of the round. Questions can be answers via Instagram @nikkignarlea

The Boi:
      1.   Work 8 sc into a Magic Circle (8)
     2.   Inc in each st around (16)
     3.
*1 sc, inc* around (24)
     4.
*2 sc, inc* around (32)
5-9.    Sc in each st around (32)
*Next round will create the belly/curves*
    10.   Sc 10, *3 sc, dec* 3 times, sc 8 (35)
11-15.   Sc in each st around (35)
    16.   Sc 10, *3 sc, dec* 3 times, sc 8 (32)
     17.   *2 sc, dec* around (24)
     18.   *1 sc, dec* around (16)
                *Attach eyes between rows 8-9*
                *Stuff completely*
      19.   Dec 8x (8)

Fasten off, weave the tail end through the front loops of Round 19 and pull tight to cinch closed, weave in remaining ends.
Finishing:
  • Using brown yarn and your tapestry needle, weave the yarn between various stitches to give the appearance of dirt. Weave around the same stitch multiple times to make dirt spots larger.
  • Using a small bit of felt, cult a half circle and use your favorite method of fastening (I use fabric glue) to give him a nice smile.
  • Now look at him. Look what you made. Your very own Bud the Spud. Share him everywhere and make sure to tag #gnarlea or @nikkignarlea so I can see them!

Rows 5-9 says 32 stitches. Row 10 says 35 stitches. There are decreases so you can't have more stitches then the previous rows. It should always be less due to the decreases.

I think Row 10 is supposed to be an increase row. Like this:

10. Sc 10, *3 sc, inc* 3 times, sc 8 (35)

The decreases come later, in Row 16.

Row 10: Sc 10, *3 sc, dec* 3 times, sc 8 is what it reads, however it doesn't give you 35. I have to agree that it should say inc instead, also you need to sc 10 instead of 8 to get the 35.
16. Sc 10, *3 sc, dec* 3 times, sc 8 (32), instead of the sc 8 times at the end, it should be sc 10 to get the correct number.
