Picture
Materials:
  • Oombawka Designs Free Crochet Hat Pattern (Newborn-Adult)
  • Yarn matching what you used to make the hat
  • Hook matching what you used to make the hat
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Stitch Markers (optional)

Notes:
This pattern is for Teddy Bear Ear Additions that you can make to attach onto any hat pattern. Each ear is made separately and then sewn onto a hat. Ears can be adjusted in size by increasing or decreasing the size of the hook and yarn.
I used Oombawka Designs Free Simple Double Crochet Hat Pattern for the 3-6 month old size. The ears are made in a long, oval shape and are folded in half to get the adorable appearance of bear ears.

Terms:
  • Stitch (st)
  • Slip Stitch (sl st)
  • Repeat (**) around (repeat steps within asterisks)
  • Double Crochet (dc)
  • Double Crochet Decrease (dc2tog)
  • Fasten Off (FO)

Pattern:
Start with a Magic Ring
  1. Work 6 dc into magic ring, sl st to join (6)
  2. 2 dc in each stitch around, sl st to join (12st)
  3. *1 dc in first st, 2 dc in next st* Repeat (**) around, sl st to join (18 st)
  4. *1 dc in first 2 st, 2 dc in next st* Repeat (**) around, sl st to join (24 st)
  5. *1 dc in first 3 st, 2 dc in next st* Repeat (**) around, sl st to join (36 st) *Repeat Round 5 to desired height for fox or rabbit ears*
  6. Rnd 6: *1 dc in first 3 st, dc2tog* Repeat * around, sl st to join (24st)

FO and leave a long tail for sewing. Attach to desired hat and behold your crazy awesome talent to make something simple into something adorable

Tried to follow your pattern but it just didn't look right. So I added a ch 2 at the beginning of each round, did round 1 twice & so far it's looking like a hat instead of a dunce cap. LOL.

Hi Alyssa! A Magic Ring is used as a starting point while working in the round. The easiest way to make one: chain 4, and slip stitch into the 4th chain from your hook, creating a ring, and work 6 single crochet into the ring. If you are still having trouble, try searching for "magic ring tutorial" on youtube. There are many ways to make one!

This photo is irresistible, and I want to make some SO much! I seem to be missing key info, though. What size is this hat, how much yarn is needed, and where are the directions for the ears? :-(

Hi Merrilee! So I used Vannas Choice yarn by Lion Brand. I can usually make 2-3 hats out of one skein. The hat is sized for a 0-6 months. If I can recall correctly, I think I made mine by increasing until row 6 (sc 4, inc, repeat) and then crochet around for the remaining rows.

The directions for the ears are above these comments in the blog post!

I will be making these hats again and will update this post with the free pattern for the hat!

Hi
Do you have the link to your pattern for the hat in this post? This is such a cute beanie, I would like to make this for a NB baby.
